About us

BOB MAHER
I am a Geographic Scientist who has been fortunate to play a significant role in two Nova Scotia educational initiatives: the creation of the College of Geographic Sciences in 1986, and the formation of the Applied Geomatics Research Group in 2000. Today, I am co-principal of Paradise Orchards which produces organic apple cider for the local market.

Geographic technology, on both web and mobile platforms, continues to allow for the development of new applications. My current conceptual interests include the creative rural economy and the idea of a community information utility. The road to Georgetown project allows us to explore these ideas and to develop useful products.

HEATHER STEWART
I am a keen hiker and a vegetation ecologist. I am outside as often as possible in the rural landscape. My vision of a rural economy is one that is diverse with many small enterprises supported by the local population, as well as by abundant visitors.

EDWARD WEDLER
I have been involved in small business for over 30 years in rural Nova Scotia and have recently sold that business; leaving it in the capable hands of another entrepreneur. I have conducted research in applied science and engineering, and have instructed at the Centre for Geographic Sciences at the Nova Scotia Community College in the Annapolis Valley. These days my interests lie in effective communication (thus my interest in storytelling) via Toastmasters International and in exploration of creative rural communities around the globe (thus my work on "Creative Rural").

When I hear about people who pioneer ideas in their communities, who set out a vision that others eventually join, and who through sweat-equity build quality of place and economic well-being I get excited. I need to know what makes those people tick and discover the challenges and opportunities they encountered along the way.
